STEVE HARVEY MOMENT AT THE HEADIES AWARDS IN NIGERIA

And so the long awaited and coveted Headies awards held on January 1st 2016 at the Landmark Events Centre, Lagos. The show was co-hosted by  comedy ace, Bovi and dance artist, Kaffy.

From start to finish, it was a moment that combined hopes and fears for the nominees as they awaited the call of winners in the different categories. But one moment that drew much drama was the announcement of the winner for the  Next Rated Category. Not only was the winner meant to drive home with a brand new Hyundai car, but the comic antics of Bovi did not make matters any lighter.

Hopes were risen, temperatures were high, hearts pounding when the winner for the category was announced. But rather than 'Reekado Banks', the announcer called out 'Reekado Blanks'.

Whooopsssss!!! And in what looked like a Steeve Harvey moment, the announcer, Bovi, said "I am sorry. I made a mistake" What?!!! Blood levels were pushed to 'non-clinically acceptable' levels. Eyes were fixed on the stage. Is this going to happen in Nigeria too?

Bovi continues "I mentioned Reekado Blanks but the correct winner is Reekado Banks." Hmmm!!! Relieve!!! But the reaction from Banks told what the story would have been if Bovi had actually intended to call an entirely different name as the winner of the Next Rated Category. He pulled off his jacket and threw it at Bovi who sensing what near-stroke point he had brought the young artist to, had taken to his heels long enough.

It seemed a case of an irreparably crashed hope for YBNL signee, Lil Kesh who struggled to stand on his feet while holding back his disappointment at not winning the award in this category. He seemed the most beaten of the nominees which included Kiss Daniels, Reekado Banks, Korede Bello and himself. It took repeated 'hugs of consolation' from Reekado to energize the man in him and help him fight  tears and save face.

For Kiss Daniel, he showed the kind of sportsmanship that the duo of Korede and Kesh couldn't muster, an attitude that says we live to fight another day. He literally accepted the result even before announcement; he seemed to have understood the principle of reducing risks by reducing expectations.

Korede would have loved to win much like the other nominees would have too but the look on his face betrayed the disappointment he felt deep within. But in the end, it was a victory for the Supreme Mavin Dynasty as a group over the other labels as far as that category was concerned.

Congrats to the winner.
